People in Siquijor move around in various ways. Some use motorbikes, cars, SUVs, and other private vehicles. But the general public uses what we call habal-habal, tricycles, easyrides and jeepneys. In Siquijor we don’t have taxis and buses since we are just a small island. At present, habal-habal or motorbike with driver for hire is not allowed to avoid close contact. Some tourists also enjoy moving around with rented motorbikes.
Habal-Habal
Habal-Habal is one of the most common transportation in Siquijor along with tricycles. While it is not so comfortable for some people who are used to riding four wheeled-vehicles, riding a habal-habal in Siquijor has become an essential lifestyle since in the mountains and interior barangays this is the only mode of transpotation.
Tricycle
Similar to most places in the Philippines, a tricycle is one of the most popular mode of transportation. A small motorbike attached to a “carriage” on the side and a luggage compartment on its rear, it can carry up to three to five passengers, depending on their height and built. When traveling via a tricycle, the drive can be slow since some tricycles use old motorbikes and have much lower engine horsepower. Sometimes, passengers are even asked to step out on some ascending roads, or even push the tricycle to keep it going. While some drivers may be willing to bring you to neighboring towns, be prepared for a long, uncomfortable trip – or a lengthy and bumpy adventure, whichever way you look at it.
Jeepney / Easyride
In Siquijor, Jeepneys or Easyrides are also available, offering cheaper fares and fixed routes. Prepare for some waiting time since easyrides or jeepneys usually depart when all seats are filled up or when their allocated time to load passengers is up. While most tall passengers struggle to fit inside easyrides or jeepneys, this is popular among foreigners who want to experience the ride while on holiday.
Van
Similar to other tourist destinations, vans for hire are the most popular mode of transportation due to its speed, safety and convenience.
